NEW TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The amendments to the "Act Governing the Punishment of Violation of Road Traffic Regulations" adopted in April by the Legislative Yuan took effect on Friday (June 30), imposing stricter penalties on drivers.

The fines for failing to yield to pedestrians have been increased, with a maximum penalty of NT$6,000 and a deduction of three points from the driver's license, accompanied by a mandatory three-hour traffic safety course.

Authorities have raised the fines for driving without a license to a maximum of NT$24,000 and the maximum penalty for dangerous driving to NT$36,000.

Furthermore, the list of offenses the public can report now includes 13 additional violations. You can now report parking violations, failure to yield to pedestrians during turns, and failure to reduce speed when passing through traffic-free intersections.

The newly reportable violations by the public include illegally parking on sidewalks for a short period, failure to reduce speed when pedestrians cross at intersections without traffic lights, and failure to give way to vehicles or pedestrians before starting.

Also, the lack of attention to pedestrians or failure to reduce speed before making a U-turn, failure to indicate reverse lights before backing up, and lack of attentiveness to other vehicles or pedestrians while reversing will be sanctioned.

Additionally, following emergency vehicles such as fire trucks, ambulances, police vehicles, and emergency response vehicles at high speeds and parking in front of entrances or fire hydrants in public areas will also result in fines.
