TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The latest presidential polls released by online news outlet "My-Formosa.com" on Thursday (Aug. 24) showed the Democratic Progressive Party's (DPP) candidate, Lai Ching-te, in the lead at 40.3%.

Meanwhile, Taiwan People's Party's (TPP) candidate, Ko Wen-je, trailed behind at 22%, and Kuomintang's (KMT) candidate, Hou Yu-ih, came in third at 19.1%.

In one of the polls, non-Lai supporters were asked whether they would be willing to vote for the non-DPP candidate currently leading the polls in a bid to take down the ruling party; however, most of the pollsters expressed disagreement with such a strategy.

Huang Chuang-shia, a veteran journalist, thus interpreted that the KMT's efforts for unity are merely wishful thinking.

In a separate public opinion poll including possible independent candidate business tycoon Terry Gou, Lai led with 37.5%, Ko secured 18.9%, Hou received 17.9%, while Gou fell behind at 12%.

Hence, Huang suggested that the 48.8% combined support for the three non-DPP candidates could benefit the KMT legislators.
