TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese business tycoon Terry Gou formally declared his candidacy for the upcoming presidential elections at 10 a.m. on Monday (Aug. 28).

The founder of Foxconn is positioning himself as an independent candidate and has extended an invitation to Huang Shih-hsiu to assume the role of his campaign spokesperson.

Gou openly conveyed his intention to participate in the 2024 presidential election, presenting himself as an industry specialist with five decades of practical experience. He asserts that no other figure in Taiwanese politics can fill his shoes.

He underlined Taiwan's imperative for transparent politics, commitment to policies, national serenity, and adept presidential leadership.

He contends that amidst military tensions in the Taiwan Strait and between the United States and China, Taiwan must steer clear of echoing Ukraine's situation.

Gou pledged that should he secure the presidency, he will strive to usher in half a century of tranquility for Taiwan within a potential four-year term, all while safeguarding the enduring existence of the Republic of China.

According to the Presidential and Vice Presidential Election and Recall Act, to run for president as an independent candidate in 2024, Gou would need to collect signatures from 1.5% of the total number of electors in the latest legislative election, which is about 290,000 people. Signatures from the supporters will be collected from Sept. 19 to Nov. 2.
