MBABANE, ESWATINI (TVBS News) — President Tsai Ing-wen pledged to revise the "African Plan" during an expatriate banquet in Eswatini after overseeing the signing of three agreements on Monday (Sept. 5).

Tsai's visit was marked by a tight schedule filled with significant events. Upon landing, President Tsai was warmly greeted by enthusiastic overseas Taiwanese supporters.

Tsai later joined King Mswati III of Eswatini in overseeing the signing of three agreements, which focused on three critical areas: energy security cooperation, women's empowerment, and establishing a sister-city relationship.

Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai was also in attendance to sign a sister city agreement with the capital of Eswatini, Mbabane. Chen highlighted that Kaohsiung's experience can assist Eswatini in promoting the transformation of its ICT industry and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Later in the evening, President Tsai attended an expatriate banquet where over 250 overseas Taiwanese expats attended.

During the banquet, Tsai promised to revise her "African Plan" to align it with current and future needs.

"If I don't accomplish the goals, I will hand it over to our next president," Tsai said.

"I'll definitely let everyone know that the project is in the next president's hands; if you have any questions, press him!" the president added jokingly.

Tsai's remark elicited laughter from the expatriate attendees concerned about Taiwan's position in African nations.

Eswatini, the only African nation that maintains diplomatic relations with Taiwan, is seen by China as the "final piece of the puzzle" in its efforts to exert influence in Africa.

President Tsai's visit to Eswatini not only underscores the importance of the friendship between Eswatini and Taiwan but also sends a clear message to the world: Taiwan will diligently seek international support by showcasing its technological strength and commitment to progressive values.
