TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Election Commission (CEC) announced on Tuesday (Sept. 12) the proceedings for the upcoming 16th presidential and vice-presidential election due in four months, scheduled for Jan. 13, 2024.

The number of eligible voters is estimated to be around 19.5 million, including 1.028 million first-time voters, and 17,794 polling stations will be established nationwide.

Business tycoon Terry Gou, who intends to run for president as an independent candidate, must qualify by citizen endorsement from today till Sept. 17.

CEC Chairman Lee Chin-yung emphasized that overseas citizens wishing to return home to vote can register at local civil affairs offices until Dec. 4.

On voting day, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., voters can cast three votes, including one for the president and vice president, a local or indigenous legislative member, and a political party, respectively.

Amendments have been made to the "Public officials Election and Recall Act," setting standards for candidate qualifications, mandatory identification for political advertisements, handling of false information, opinion poll reporting, and more.

Candidate registration commences on Nov. 20 and finalizes on Nov. 24 through party endorsement or application via petition.

Campaign spending is capped at NT$427.494 million. The parties qualified to nominate candidates include the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Kuomintang (KMT), Taiwan People's Party (TPP), and New Power Party (NPP).

The nomination threshold is 1.5% of the total votes from the last presidential election, equivalent to 289,667 signatures.
