TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Business tycoon and independent presidential candidate Terry Gou announced on Thursday (Sept. 14) that renowned singer-actress Lai Pei-hsia would be his running mate. Despite being political neophytes, both committed to "boost Taiwan's economy" and "take the country to where it should be."

In the morning press conference, Lai, who played a role as a presidential candidate winning the election in the Netflix show 'Wave Makers,' vowed to "accompany Gou to the end as long as Mrs. Gou agrees."

"I know the road ahead may be rough," Lai noted, "If Mr. and Mrs. Gou both say yes, I will do everything I can to assist them in fulfilling their wishes."

Gou highlighted that after visiting multiple places in the country and talking to locals, everyone kept telling him that they wanted a more robust economy, they wanted change, and they did not 'want a partisan fight between the Kuomintang (KMT) and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).'

"We want someone who understands the economy, can be a mentor with a caring character, and knows how to communicate to change Taiwan together," Gou added.

Guo also acknowledged that, although both of them may be seen as political novices by the public, they know where the country should head. "We do not have political baggage," Guo said.

Huang Shih-hsiu, a spokesperson for Guo's campaign office, noted that Guo's participation aims at uniting all opposition parties. After Thursday's announcement, Huang announced Gou plans to register for the presidential election at the Central Election Commission either on Sept. 16-17.
