TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Opposition presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih expressed his goal to further strengthen Taiwan-U.S. relations during a speech on Sunday (Sept. 17) in a banquet with overseas Taiwanese representatives in Washington, D.C.

With a hope of intensifying friendship between Taiwan and the U.S., Hou seeks to enhance national unity by uniting the people of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen, and Matsu under the spirit of patriotism. He emphasized his dedication to peace and the sustained development of the Republic of China, recognizing the global concern over the tension in the Taiwan Strait.

"Will a war break out across the Taiwan Strait? Is there any way for peace between the two sides? How will the future of cross-strait issues be resolved?" Hou shared the questions he received from people. "Stability in the Taiwan Strait and Taiwan's security will be my top priority if I were elected president," he said.

Hou accentuated his commitment to democracy and freedom, looking to bolster the alliance with the U.S. through deepening cooperation in politics, economics, trade, and technology. With the U.S.'s support, he foresees a stronger Taiwan, competent in assuring peace, lowering conflicts through dialogue with mainland China, and progressing steadily.

Laura Rosenberger, chair of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), also graced the occasion, stating Taiwan's role as an indispensable partner in maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait aligns with the U.S. profound, long-term interests.

She reaffirmed the U.S. unabated resolve to support Taiwan in maintaining sufficient self-defense capabilities. "Let me assure you that our commitment to that remains rock solid," Rosenberger said.
