TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Shihlin District Prosecutor's Office on Tuesday (Sept. 26) ordered the main suspect of last year's (2022) high-profile scam case to compensate each of the families of the three victims with NT$1.8 million, totaling NT$5.4 million.

Last year, Taiwan was shaken by a chilling scam, where a fraudulent group used deceptive job postings to defraud and held job seekers captive. Hundreds were deceived, and in the process, three people tragically died and were abandoned in the wilderness.

Investigations revealed that the fraud scheme affected over 300 people, 61 of whom were held captive, generating illicit profits of around NT$400 million.

Prosecutors identified the ringleader, Tu Cheng-che, as accountable for 705 offenses. Each of the three other core members was found responsible for 702 crimes. This makes it the case with the highest number of offenses committed by defendants in a single fraud case in Taiwan.

Given that Tu Cheng-che and the others face a total of 2,811 charges. Due to the complexity of the case and the specialized professional knowledge required, however, citizen judges will not be involved in the trial.
