KEELUNG (TVBS News) — An anxious crowd of aspiring taxi drivers gathered in front of the Keelung City Police Bureau, scrambling to register for taxi service permits.

Some even came from as far as Taoyuan and New Taipei City to apply. High demand prompted prospective drivers to line up overnight, hoping to be among the first to secure these coveted permits.

The attraction? These particular taxi operational licenses pave the way to a new career and offer exemption from the 5% business tax, license tax, and fuel tax.

Competition is fierce, with only 900 slots available for the northern region, of which a mere 100 are allotted to Keelung City.

Yet, the race didn't stop at Keelung. Many residents braved the hot weather, relentlessly touring various counties and cities, searching for places with available slots for examination registration.

The surge in taxi permit applicants indicates a significant interest in the profession, lured by significant tax benefits despite the intense competition and grueling registration process.
