TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Lai Ching-te, the presidential candidate from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), outlined his ambitions regarding Taiwan's economy and investment at a policy forum on Tuesday (Oct. 3).

The ambitions include creating 20,000 new startup jobs within five years, achieving an annual investment in startups of NT$150 billion, and making Taiwan a net exporter of innovative solutions within a decade.

Lai believes that Taiwan's industries should establish a solid foundation in Taiwan while also planning for global expansion and marketing.

His proposals aim to support businesses establishing research and development centers across multiple countries and setting up science industrial parks and overseas startup centers in the Indo-Pacific region through international collaborations.

Lai inferred plans to persistently advance bilateral and multilateral economic and trade agreements with the U.S., Japan, and Europe.

He expressed interest in joining regional economic collaborations like the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF), concurrently intending to magnify engagement with Southeast Asian countries by deepening the "New Southbound Policy."

To optimize the entrepreneurial ecosystem, Lai suggests adjusting laws and regulations, increasing investments, and expanding international startup clusters.

Finally, he pledged to grant young entrepreneurial talents overseas innovative internship opportunities.
