TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan People's Party presidential candidate Ko Wen-je advocates for the island's constitutional system to transition towards a parliamentary system.

If elected, Ko aims to establish the role of prime minister in the history of the Republic of China.

According to Ko, Taiwanese politics are decided by the president and the mayors of the six special municipalities, representing nearly 70% of Taiwan's population, with no efficient checks and balances.

Despite city mayors being held accountable to the legislative council, the president can avoid press conferences and parliamentary oversight while controlling all political activities behind the scenes.

Ko stresses that the term of office should not be the sole objective of a presidential candidate. He insists that they should aim for Taiwan's long-term stability and prosperity.

With the 2024 election looking to be a crucial turning point, Ko is urging the end of the 'dictatorial presidential system with power but no responsibility' and advocating for a return to a people-centric form of governance where the state's power truly lies in the hands of the people.
