TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Chen Binhua blasted the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on Wednesday (Oct. 11), accusing it of hypocrisy over its stance on cross-strait relations.

Chen said the DPP talks of peace and dialogue while steadfastly advocating for Taiwan's independence and refuses to acknowledge the 1992 Consensus.

These remarks came a day after President Tsai Ing-Wen declared peace as the only option for the Taiwan Strait on Taiwan's National Day (Oct. 10). She expressed a willingness for "peaceful coexistence" with China, attempting to foster an interactive foundation both parties could accept.

During a press conference, Chen criticized the DPP for not acknowledging the One China policy and the 1992 Consensus since coming to power in 2016 and accused the DPP of damaging the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.

Chen claimed that the door for dialogue would remain open if the DPP changed its pro-independence stance. Otherwise, any form of negotiation would be futile.

Furthermore, he stated that China's Ministry of Commerce would consider suspending or partially suspending the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement-induced customs tariff concessions for Taiwan due to the DPP's obstruction of cross-strait cooperation.

He urged Taiwan's residents to rally against the island's independence to safeguard welfare.
