TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As the 2024 presidential election in Taiwan approaches, presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih of the Kuomintang (KMT) party has reportedly set a deadline of Friday (Nov. 3) for final negotiations with the Taiwan People's Party (TPP).

Hou reportedly said that if an agreement is not reached by then, there will be no further talks.

KMT Chairman Eric Chu, Hou, and TPP Chairman Ko Wen-je met on Oct. 31 in a closed-door meeting to try and reach an agreement. However, they failed to do so.

The preliminary negotiation was originally scheduled for Friday, but Chu was worried about the outcome and brought the meeting forward to Oct. 31.

The meeting lasted 53 minutes but resulted in a deadlock, with all parties sticking to their viewpoints without reaching a consensus.

Ko had warned the day before that there would be no point in another meeting without a clear action plan.

Meanwhile, Chu emphasized that the focus of the tripartite meeting was to express good intentions, alleviate anxieties, and put themselves in each other's shoes. Chu stressed that what they were seeking was a method for party negotiation, not a competition.
