TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Legislators and veterinarian groups in Taiwan on Thursday (Nov. 2) demanded an accelerated process for granting treatment approval for Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), an often fatal disease for cats.

The disease is particularly prevalent in cats with weakened immune systems of older or younger cats. The mortality rate is almost 100%, and it isn't easy to diagnose and prevent. In Taiwan, there are currently no legal medications for this disease.

Legislator Kao Chia-yu teamed up with veterinarian groups to offer a glimmer of hope for cats suffering from this disease.

According to research, GS-441524 tablets have proven curative effects, but with the outbreak of COVID-19, the application process for animal medication has been paused.

At the press conference, the president of the Taiwan Academy of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Chung Sheng-hua, also stated that Remdesivir, a COVID-19 medication, and Molnupiravir from MSD have proven effective against FIP.

Chung urged relevant authorities to expedite the legalization of these drugs, thus obtaining the required animal medication permits.
