Taiwan, NASA set up Asia Pacific AERONET Calibration Center

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Environment (MOENV) formally established the Asia Pacific AERONET Calibration and Training Center (APAC) on Thursday (Nov. 2) in collaboration with the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

The calibration platform set up at the Lulin Atmospheric Background Station aims to enhance the quality of air quality monitoring data and contribute to climate change research.

MOENV Minister Shieu Fuh-sheng stated that the project, co-run by the EPA, Central Weather Administration (CWA), and the Taiwan Space Agency (TASA), will aid regional smog control and carbon reduction strategies. It will also help elevate Taiwan's global standing.

Upon the center's establishment, CWA Administrator Cheng Chia-ping said it would boost Taiwanese scholars' confidence in data mastery, enhancing research quality and fostering expert talent. He added that it would increase Taiwan's international competitiveness in research and benefit Southeast Asian nations.

TASA Director-General Wu Jong-shinn expressed hopes that the calibration center would enhance international cooperation and strengthen Southeast Asian countries' capacity to use and analyze data.

The MOENV highlighted that the data produced by AERONET will be directly or indirectly to global air quality and climate change research, which underscores Taiwan's sustainable responsibility and proactive participation in environmental monitoring.
