TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is facing significant criticism from opposition parties for its alleged failures in improving cross-strait relations amid China's aggressive military postures, including encircling warplanes and live-fire drills near Taiwan.

In a televised interview on Wednesday (Nov. 14), DPP presidential candidate Lai Ching-teh addressed these concerns. He outlined a comprehensive approach to maintaining cross-strait peace through a government action plan based on four main pillars.

Lai detailed the first pillar as strengthening national defense and security, and the second as enhancing the competitiveness of Taiwan's key industries to ensure economic security.

The third pillar involves aligning closely with democratic countries to maximize deterrent forces against potential threats. The fourth pillar suggests a more conciliatory stance towards China, with Lai advocating for cooperative relationships for the mutual benefit of both communities, based on mutual respect.

Lai emphasized that the upcoming election is gaining significant attention as it represents a crucial battle between democracy and autocracy, resonating with both domestic and international audiences.

He stated, "Taiwan has found itself at a crossroads with every preceding election. There are two paths before us, and the decision should be about moving forward, not a dilemma between war and peace."

Lai reaffirmed his commitment to defending Taiwan's democracy and highlighted his capabilities in protecting the nation's security and interests.
