TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In an inspiring tale of charity and skill, a 76-year-old retired man has become renowned for his unusual hobby: playing claw machines.

Chen Jung-che reportedly spent NT$30,000 to win 1,450 dolls from claw machines over the past three months and exchanged them for the latest model smartphone.

Chen is part of the Chiayi City Government's anti-aging program, which promotes activities like claw machine games to enhance concentration and dexterity among the elderly. This training method not only benefits the senior citizens cognitively but also serves a charitable cause as the won dolls are donated to social welfare institutions.

Chen, who visits the claw machine shop daily, shared that he gives many dolls to children in orphanages. "The applause and the exclamations of 'Wow, grandpa, you are so cool!' are very gratifying and mentally uplifting for us the elderly," he shared.

As more older adult facilities install claw machines, the activity is recognized not just as entertainment but as a therapeutic exercise, stimulating seniors' eyes, hands, feet, and brains.

This initiative proves that with just a few coins, the effects of aging can be combated, providing a joyful and purposeful pastime for Taiwan's senior residents.
