TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Kuomintang (KMT) presidential candidate Hou Yu-ih invited media personality Jaw Shaw-kong to be his vice-presidential running mate on Friday (Nov. 24), a decision made just hours before the official registration deadline for candidates.

Jaw, addressing TVBS World Taiwan, said: "The KMT still wanted to cooperate with Ko Wen-je, waiting until the last minute. This morning, even before 7 a.m., Hou Yu-ih called Ko Wen-je, but there was no answer."

Jaw, known for his extensive media career, expressed a mixed sense of reluctance and determination regarding his commitment to the "Hou-Jaw ticket." He has already put his TV programs on hold, though he continues to serve as chairman of the Broadcasting Corporation of China, Taiwan's broadcasting company. He pledged to resign from this position if elected.

Highlighting the significance of cross-strait relations, Jaw emphasized, "Peace is a top priority. Taiwan cannot endure any war." He also stressed the need for unity in the Blue camp, focusing on consolidating power and votes ahead of the election. Jaw expressed his eagerness for direct interaction and speeches at various institutions, highlighting the campaign's urgency with only 50 days left.

Hou Yu-ih, commenting on Jaw's selection, praised his directness and proactive stance, pivotal factors in his decision. This collaboration signifies a strategic maneuver in the KMT's campaign, indicating a concentrated effort towards the presidential elections.

Jaw's pivot to politics has prompted changes in TVBS programming, with the network seeking a new host for his previous role. This shift underscores Jaw's dedication to his political aspirations, in line with the network's commitment to neutrality and diverse news coverage.
