TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's government, also called Executive Yuan, started to implement a new five-year subsidy program for university dormitory students on Nov. 23.

Beginning in February 2024, students living on campus will receive financial assistance every semester. The government estimates that 275,000 students will benefit from this new program.

According to reports, students can receive a stipend of NT$5,000 per semester to help offset their accommodation costs. Students from low-income and lower-middle-income families will receive a higher subsidy of NT$7,000 per semester.

Accommodation fees for university dormitories vary widely, influenced mainly by room types, facilities, and location. Statistics show that 43% of the dormitories charge less than NT$10,000 per semester, while 38% have fees ranging from NT$10,000 to NT$15,000.

The annual budget for this subsidy program is estimated at NT$2.8 billion. It will be funded by the Ministry of the Interior's housing fund. This financial support aims to alleviate students' living expenses and ensure that higher education is more accessible, especially for those who are economically disadvantaged.
