TAIPEI (TVBS News) — As Taiwan's presidential and legislative elections enter their final, crucial phase, the spotlight intensifies on the presidential candidates and their vice-presidential counterparts.

his year's vice-presidential candidates are wielding unprecedented influence in the political arena, marking a significant shift in the dynamics of Taiwanese politics.

Rising Influence of Vice Presidential Candidates

Veteran media personality Shan Hou-chih commented on this trend, noting the enhanced role of vice-presidential candidates. "The vice presidential candidates are playing a more significant role compared to previous years.

From the perspective of political power, this year's candidates, especially Hsiao Bi-khim and Jaw Shaw-kong, are among the strongest ever," said Shan.

Hsiao Bi-khim of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Jaw Shaw-kong from Kuomintang (KMT), and Cynthia Wu of the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) each bring a unique blend of experience and influence.

Hsiao, a former Taiwanese representative to the U.S., has been pivotal in maintaining Taiwan's international relations, particularly with the U.S. Meanwhile, Jaw and Wu, with their strong local connections, are vital in rallying domestic support for their parties.

The Crucial Role of Vice Presidents

The increasing prominence of these candidates is not without reason. Peng Huai-en, dean of the College of Communication at Shih Hsin University, highlights the potential for a vice president to ascend to the presidency.

"There is always the chance the vice president may become president. So, under these circumstances, I believe it's not only during election times that they contribute added support for their party," Peng stated.

This perspective sheds light on the strategic importance of vice-presidential candidates in Taiwanese politics, especially as the election nears its conclusion.

With less than two weeks left, the urgency and intensity of the campaigns are palpable as all parties strive to secure the support of the Taiwanese electorate.

As Taiwan prepares to make its crucial choice, the impact of these vice-presidential candidates will undoubtedly be a key factor in the outcome of this closely watched election.
