TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Joseph Wu, revealed in a column he wrote for The Economist published on Wednesday (Jan. 3) that Taiwan is documenting and analyzing potential Chinese interference in Taiwanese elections.

The results of this research will be published post-election, he added.

Wu's column discusses the potential international impact of the Taiwanese election and the possible interference from China. He underscored the importance of this issue for democratic nations combating authoritarian interference and maintaining international order.

In a review of more than 40 countries undergoing an election, Wu emphasized that Taiwan's election is at the forefront of the battle between democracy and autocracy, and it's one of the most anticipated elections globally.

China's influence on Taiwan's election has global implications for the democratic community, Wu warned. If China successfully interferes in Taiwanese elections, it could pressure other democratic nations.

Wu outlined China's potential interference strategies, which include military threats, economic pressure, the creation of fake organizations, and the manipulation of public opinion through false websites. He urged the international community to pay attention to China's destructive actions, such as hybrid warfare tactics like cyber-attacks.

Taiwan rejects China's sovereignty claims and hopes to transform its experiences resisting authoritarian states into contributions toward a rule-based international order, Wu wrote.
