Fact-check center debunks Ko Wen-je's social housing claims (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Taiwan FactCheck Center rebutted the claim made by Taiwan People's Party (TPP) presidential candidate Ko Wen-je on Tuesday (Jan. 2), stating that most of the social housing units in Taiwan were completed during his tenure.

According to the fact-checking body, by the end of August 2023, Taiwan had a total of 27,781 social housing units, comprising 6,253 existing residences and 21,528 newly completed units.

Ko claimed at a policy presentation that the 21,528 social rental housing units available as of August 2023 were mostly completed under his administration.

During his term as mayor to 2022, a total of 11,383 social housing units were either already built or constructed, including units credited to his predecessor, Hau Lung-pin.

Out of these units, 1,297 had been initiated by Hau, with 5,279 existing before Hau took office. Only 5,062 units were actually started and completed before August 2023 under Ko's administration, accounting for just 23.51% of the nationwide newly completed total.

Even factoring in Hau's 1,297 units, projects completed under Ko's term totaled 6,359 units, or 29.54% of the nationwide total, a stark contrast to Ko's claim that he was responsible for "most" of the social housing projects.

The findings reveal a significant discrepancy between his statement and the factual data.
