TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Following their historic win in Taiwan's presidential election, President-elect Lai Ching-te and Vice President-elect Hsiao Bi-khim have pledged to continue the path set by President Tsai Ing-wen, emphasizing a strong commitment to democracy and a balanced approach to cross-strait relations.

Upholding Democratic Values

In a statement to the international media, Lai expressed deep gratitude to his opponents for maintaining the spirit of democracy and extended congratulations to their respective parties. He highlighted the significance of this election in the global democratic narrative, praising Taiwan's ability to resist external influences and reaffirm its democratic values. According to Lai, the election results showcase a definitive preference for democratic governance over authoritarian rule.

Lai's commitment to democracy extends beyond Taiwan's borders. He underscored his critical role in preserving peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Embracing a policy that is "balanced and maintains the cross-strait status quo under the principles of dignity," Lai aims to foster a relationship with China that replaces obstructionism with dialogue and confrontation with cooperation. He believes this approach will enhance the well-being of people on both sides of the strait, ultimately leading to peace and shared prosperity.

Legislative Challenges and Future Goals
The election, however, brought mixed results for Lai's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). The party did not secure a majority in the legislative elections, prompting Lai to acknowledge the need for self-reflection and improvement. He emphasized the urgency of forming an effective government that meets the public's expectations.

Lai's response to the new legislative landscape focuses on open communication, consultation, and cooperation. He intends to incorporate the policies of his opponents into his administration's framework, aiming to advance Taiwan's national development and cultivate an inclusive political environment.
