TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Chen Chien-jen initially planned to lead his cabinet in a mass resignation on Thursday (Jan. 18); however, President Tsai Ing-wen convinced him to stay, and the cabinet team is expected to remain in office until May 20.

Critics have warned this could cause potential problems as the old cabinet faces a new public opinion in the new legislature, potentially leaving the government in a state of paralysis.

Kuomintang (KMT) legislator Lee De-wei warned that such a move could put the government at a standstill, and his fellow party legislator Tseng Ming-chung suggested that the cabinet's continued stay might result in critical decisions not being made.

On the other hand, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator Chung Chia-pin pointed out that as there has not been a rotation of parties, the incumbent president has the right to choose her cabinet members.

With the new legislature starting from Feb. 1, this move by the current government could garner critical issues.
