TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Vice President and President-elect Lai Ching-te extended a warm welcome to the U.S. Congressional Taiwan Caucus on Thursday (Jan. 25). He expressed optimism about ongoing American support for Taiwan's self-defense, emphasizing the joint effort to protect regional peace, stability, and prosperity in the Taiwan Strait.

The Congressional Taiwan Caucus delegation, led by co-chairs Republican Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart and Democratic Rep. Ami Bera, concluded their visit to Taiwan from January 24 to 25. This visit, the first joint visit by the caucus co-chairs in recent years, holds significant significance.

During their meeting at the Presidential Office, Lai highlighted the delegation's visit as a powerful demonstration of unwavering support for Taiwan during this critical period. He also expressed his hopes for the completion of the U.S.-Taiwan Expedited Double Tax Relief Act.

Lai underscored Taiwan's strategic importance, particularly in countering expanding authoritarian influences from China. He emphasized Taiwan's location in the first island chain in the Western Pacific and its vital role in the global industry supply chain.

Despite persistent military threats and gray-zone activities from China, Taiwan has remained resolute in maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, according to Lai.

Celebrating the 45th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, Lai sees it as a fundamental basis for advancing Taiwan-U.S. relations. He expressed anticipation for continued deep collaboration with the United States.

In response, Diaz-Balart reaffirmed the unwavering, bipartisan support of the United States for Taiwan, describing Taiwan as a beacon of democracy and a symbol of freedom and prosperity.

Bera echoed Lai's sentiments on ensuring regional stability, a shared conviction held by the U.S. Congress. He highlighted their joint vision for Taiwan and the United States to collaborate in addressing global challenges and continuing their cooperation for peace and prosperity.
