TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese tennis player Hsieh Su-wei and Belgium's Elise Mertens seized the Australian Open women's doubles championship on Sunday (Jan. 28).

The victory marks a rare achievement for Hsieh - she is the third player in 24 years to clinch women's and mixed doubles titles in a single Australian Open.

At 38 years and 24 days old, Hsieh is the second-oldest women's doubles champion in Grand Slam history, just eight days younger than U.S. record holder Lisa Raymond.

After an 18-month hiatus due to injury that began at the end of 2021, Hsieh made a triumphant return in 2023. Following the Australian Open win, she continued her dominant run by securing victories at the French Open and Wimbledon.

Hsieh and Mertens won the women's doubles final championship against Ukraine's Lyudmyla Kichenok and Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko, defeating them 6-1, 7-5.

Hsieh holds eight Grand Slam trophies, with seven titles in women's doubles. Her impressive collection falls short in one domain, however - she has yet to clinch a title at the U.S. Open.
