TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan's Premier Chen Chien-jen stated on Tuesday (Feb. 20) that the Taiwan Power Company's (Taipower) rate adjustments are relatively lower compared to other countries. He stressed the important role of the state-run utility conglomerate in maintaining the stability of commodity prices critical to people's livelihood, promising to make proceedings about future electricity price hikes transparent.

The electricity price review committee is slated to convene in mid-March, with sources revealing that all-inclusive electricity price rises, including for residential power not previously subjected to hikes, could take effect from April.

The premier cited the Russia-Ukraine war as a major factor responsible for soaring prices of raw materials for power generation. Despite these challenges, he affirmed the comparatively low rate of adjustment made by Taipower compared to counterparts in various countries.

Responding to reporters, Chen indicated that Taipower is making maximum effort to control costs and enhance efficiency. The issue of whether electricity prices need to be adjusted will continue to be debated in the electricity price review committee.

Chen stated that all changes in electricity charges would be individually explained to the public, highlighting Taipower's role in price stability and elaborating on the rationale behind any necessary adjustments to electricity prices.
