TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Addressing the challenges posed by China, Taiwanese Vice President Lai Ching-te on Thursday (Feb. 22) emphasized Taiwan's commitment to peace, equality, democracy, and dialogue, assuring a strengthening of national defense and security to protect Taiwan.

Lai met with a U.S. delegation led by Representative Mike Gallagher, and expressed his gratitude for the support of the congressman and the congressional task force on the "House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party."

Encouraging continued congressional efforts in fighting for peace and democracy, Lai pledged his and the soon-to-be-inaugurated Vice President-Elect Hsiao Bi-khim's cooperation in facing future challenges.

Gallagher asserted his continuous support and pursuit of a deeper Taiwan-U.S. relationship.

Gallagher's visit marks his role leading a delegation of bipartisan heavyweight politicians visiting Taiwan.

It underlines the integral relationship between the U.S. and Taiwan, particularly against the backdrop of an increasingly ambitious China.

Lai's meeting with the delegation accentuates Taiwan's determination to engage in peaceful, equal, democratic dialog and fortify its defenses, thus safeguarding its sovereignty.
