Control Yuan probes Taipei construction for Building Act breach (TVBS News)

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Control Yuan Commissioners Lin Kuo-ming and Chang Chu-fang announced Friday (March 1) they have proactively launched an investigation into the construction site collapse on Qingcheng Street in Taipei's Songshan District to determine whether the Building Act had been violated.

The construction site disaster hit on the night of Feb. 23, resulting in a collapse that saw a 1.5-meter-deep sinkhole form. The road adjacent to the site also significantly tilted towards the pit.

The cave-in resulted in damage to four cars and instilled fear among nearby residents concerning the potential impact on their housing structures.

The investigation led by Lin and Chang will particularly focus on the Taipei City Government regarding its process of inspection and review of construction works.

The commissioners further indicated that the incident involving the collapse of the construction site's diaphragm wall, suggests the need to review and improve the current operational procedures.

The inquiry is also set to determine whether there was negligence on the part of the Taipei City Government and if its supervisory responsibility had been fully carried out.

As the investigation unfolds, potential legal consequences could arise for the incident if the Building Act was indeed breached.
