TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The effects of runway maintenance at Taoyuan International Airport have been reviewed, the Minister of Transportation and Communications Wang Kwo-tsai said on Tuesday (March 5).

Since March 3, the airport's southern runway underwent annual maintenance, leaving only the northern runway available for takeoff and landing. This has led to numerous flight delays and reschedulings, with some flights diverted to Taipei Sungshan Airport and Kaohsiung International Airport. Many travelers were subsequently affected by these changes.

By the evening of March 4, the maintenance work was completed, with dual runway operations resuming at 9 p.m.

Wang emphasized that runway maintenance is a crucial aspect of airport safety. Nevertheless, since Taoyuan International Airport operates 24 hours a day, any repairs to the runway inevitably affect flight schedules.

Going forward, Wang confirmed that discussions are underway at Taoyuan International Airport on how to mitigate the impact of annual runway maintenance on flights and passengers. The airport will strive to ensure this type of situation is not repeated in the future.
