TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Chen Chien-jen said on Tuesday (March 5) that the Executive Yuan must be held accountable in responding to inquiries from the Legislative Yuan, as required by the Constitution. His remarks were given ahead of a question and answer session at the legislature.

In an interview with the media before facing inquiries at the Legislative Yuan, Chen addressed the Kuomintang's (KMT) proposed law to criminalize contempt of the legislative body, punishable by up to three years in prison.

Chen suggested these situations should be handled in line with constitutional provisions, including giving policy reports and accepting essential inquiries as necessary.

He noted his ongoing respect for the legislature's inquiries during its implementation process. He stated that, if necessary, he has engaged in detailed exchanges of opinions to help lawmakers understand the truth.

Chen emphasized that rational questioning is a sign of a democratic society. He made it clear that the Executive Yuan will work hand in hand with the Legislative Yuan to ensure the queries made in the legislature are following the ideals of democracy. These efforts, he said, will also help citizens understand all policy actions.
