TAIPEI (TVBS News) — U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell emphasized the unique value of the United States' relationship with Taiwan during a speech on Wednesday (March 6) to mark the 45th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act.

McConnell warned that China's aggressive redrawing of global boundaries necessitates a stronger alliance between America and Taiwan, along with increased investment in military capabilities. The Act, he stated, supports ongoing cultural, commercial, and other relations between the U.S. and the people of Taiwan, furthering American foreign policy and maintaining peace and stability in the Western Pacific.

Over the past 45 years, McConnell highlighted Taiwan's enhanced resilience; the island has developed a vibrant democracy, a dynamic civil society, and a modern, innovative high-tech economy. Taiwan is increasingly arming itself with advanced American military capabilities, reflecting its efforts toward military modernization and reforms.

At a time when the credibility of the United States is under scrutiny by both allies and adversaries, McConnell views the U.S.-Taiwan partnership as an increasingly significant indicator of bipartisan American commitment. This relationship gains importance against a backdrop of the U.S. abandoning allies in Afghanistan, squandering leverage over Iran, and being slow to assist Ukraine.

McConnell pointed out that since 2015, China has publicly doubled its military expenditure, with an additional increase of 7.2% in defense spending, signaling China's ongoing military modernization and its expanding regional influence.

He noted Taiwanese leaders draw parallels between a bold Russia in Europe and an assertive China in the Indo-Pacific, with the Taiwanese people increasingly recognizing the importance of preparing to deter and defend against potential invasions.

More importantly, McConnell called on America to support its allies, confront adversaries, and boost military investments.
