TAIPEI (TVBS News) — In response to calls from a former U.S. official for the White House to clarify its strategy towards Taiwan, Minister of Foreign Affairs  (MOFA) Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) expressed respect for the ways allies choose to communicate their positions on Thursday (May 30).

Lin's comments came during his first report to the Legislative Yuan's Foreign and National Defense Committee (外交及國防委員會), where he addressed the complexities of Taiwan's international relations and defense strategies.

Clarifying U.S. Strategy on Taiwan

Joseph Bosco, the former China country director in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, recently emphasized the importance of a clear White House stance on Taiwan. In an op-ed for The Hill, Bosco argued that the U.S. President Joe Biden needs to make a definitive statement on defending Taiwan, beyond impromptu remarks to reporters, to deter China's military ambitions.

Lin echoed this sentiment in the Legislative Yuan, highlighting any efforts to prevent the Chinese Communist Party from altering the status quo in the Taiwan Strait, including Biden's public speeches, as crucial to maintaining peace and stability in the region.

Taiwan's Growing International Support

Lin also pointed out that Taiwan has garnered more support from allies and like-minded countries, which has been instrumental in ensuring the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait. This collective effort, according to Lin, demonstrates the U.S.'s commitment to the region, contrasting with the Chinese Communist Party's attempts to change the status quo. Lin's remarks underscore the importance of clear international stances and cooperation in maintaining the delicate balance across the Taiwan Strait.
