TAIPEI (TVBS News)—Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday (June 7) its intention to deepen ties with India following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's re-election. This announcement comes amid China's objections to Taiwan's congratulatory message to Modi, highlighting a growing regional diplomatic tussle.

Taiwan's Foreign Ministry stated that exchanging greetings on democratic election outcomes is an international norm that other countries cannot interfere with.

The ministry expressed its eagerness to enhance cooperation with Modi's government in areas such as economy and technology, aiming to establish closer relations.

Prime Minister Modi, acknowledging President Lai Ching-te's congratulatory message on the X platform, expressed his anticipation for a tighter economic and technological relationship between Taiwan and India, aiming for mutual benefits.

China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning lodged a formal complaint with India, falsely claiming that India has a political commitment to the "One China" principle and should resist Taiwan's "political maneuvers."

In response, Taiwan's Foreign Ministry refuted these claims, asserting that the Republic of China (Taiwan) is a sovereign and independent country not subordinate to the People's Republic of China. The international community widely recognizes this stance.

Taiwan emphasized its commitment to engaging with the global community based on shared values of freedom, democracy, and human rights. It remains dedicated to fostering mutually beneficial cooperation with other nations, including India, to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

As tensions simmer, Taiwan's firm stance on democracy and sovereignty challenges China's diplomatic pressures, signaling a potential shift in regional alliances.
