TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Frank Hsieh (謝長廷), the head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan, disclosed on social media that the airplane he was on was struck by lightning shortly after departing from Songshan on Tuesday (June 18).

Hsieh described hearing a loud noise and seeing a flash near the window, prompting thoughts of final words.

Following the incident, a flight attendant reassured passengers, noting it was also her first experience with lightning in her career. Hsieh shared his reflections during the ordeal, contemplating messages of love to his family and the fate of a young fan he had met earlier.

He noted that aircraft handle lightning differently unlike buildings, which use lightning rods to direct strikes to the ground, suggesting they are equipped with similar protective technology. Hsieh humorously concluded his post with a remark about his luck, considering whether the rare incident should prompt him to buy a lottery ticket.
