TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Executive Yuan on Friday (June 21) endorsed a new pedestrian safety improvement plan aimed at notorious pedestrian areas, co-promoted by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) and the Ministry of the Interior (MOI).

This initiative seeks to enhance safety by speeding up the development of pedestrian traffic facilities in collaboration with local governments. Transportation Minister Li Meng-yen (李孟諺) announced that the central government will support local efforts to upgrade 799 intersections, with targets to complete 400 by September and the remainder by year's end.

Also, around 200 school zones are slated for improvements to increase safety. The Highway Bureau plans to fast-track enhancements at 500 provincial highway intersections by September, aiming for a total of 2,000 by December. Meanwhile, the MOI will install 175 traffic enforcement cameras by the end of the year.

MOI Minister Liu Shyh-fang (劉世芳) stressed that the enforcement rules for the "Regulations on Pedestrian Traffic Safety Facilities" (行人交通安全設施條例) will be implemented ahead of schedule on Oct. 1. The MOTC will also begin holding regular safety press conferences to release weekly fatality statistics and monthly death counts.
