TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Social media users were captivated Sunday (June 23) by an elderly couple who brought wooden chairs to sit on while riding the Taipei Metro (台北捷運).

The couple's decision to use their dining chairs as seating on the metro sparked a lively discussion on the social media platform Threads, drawing attention from over 60,000 users. Many reacted with humor to the photos posted online, with comments such as "All they're missing is a cup of coffee" and "They brought their own priority seats; they can sit anywhere."

The original post showed two photos and a caption from the user: "All I know is that I was trying not to laugh on the metro." It quickly went viral, earning 66,000 likes and more than 6,000 shares. Despite the levity, the Mass Rapid Transit Act permits carrying chairs as personal luggage. However, fines ranging from NT$1,500 to NT$7,500 can be imposed if these items obstruct station entrances or ticket machines after issuing a warning.

Taipei Metro (北捷) cited the passenger instructions clause prohibiting actions risking damage to metro equipment or operation. The company emphasized that it could deny service or remove offenders with police help if necessary. They also encouraged passengers to report any unusual activities to station staff or through the Taipei Metro AI customer service for prompt intervention.
