TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te (賴清德), who is also the chairperson of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), on Wednesday stated during a party executive meeting that any legislative amendments challenging the constitution are fundamentally unacceptable. President Lai reiterated his commitment to seeking a constitutional interpretation and a temporary halt to such bills from the Constitutional Court (憲法法庭), as he had previously announced during his first presidential office open-hall talk.

"The constitution is the country's fundamental law," President Lai emphasized, clarifying that opposing legislative overreach does not equate to opposing legislative reform. He affirmed the DPP's dedication to fostering a transparent, open, and sustainable legislature and supporting reasonable reforms. However, he strongly opposed amendments that would compromise constitutional order and democratic principles under the guise of reform.

Criticizing the recent amendment proposed by the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Taiwan People's Party (TPP) as an overreach, President Lai argued that it threatens the constitutional system by undermining the separation of powers, checks and balances, and the protection of basic human rights. He urged all parties to respect the forthcoming Constitutional Court decision, regardless of its outcome, and called for continued adherence to the court's judgments to further deepen Taiwan’s democracy.

The meeting also featured a special report by Associate Professor Lin Chia-he (林佳和) from the College of Law at National Chengchi University, who expressed optimism about the court accepting the temporary disposition application and proceeding swiftly with the trial.
