TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Army Education, Training, and Doctrine Development Command (陸軍教育訓練暨準則發展指揮部) confirmed on Friday (June 28) that a sergeant surnamed Chang from the Army Hualien and Taitung Defense Command (陸軍花東防衛指揮部) tragically passed away on Wednesday during a training exercise in Changhua (彰化).

The sergeant fell unconscious due to suspected health issues around 6 p.m. and, despite emergency medical treatment, could not be revived.

Training Exercise Tragedy
Sergeant Chang collapsed in his quarters during a rest period, and his unit's immediate resuscitation efforts were in vain. The Army Education, Training, and Doctrine Development Command expressed deep sorrow and regret over the incident and contacted the family immediately after.

High-ranking officers have also been dispatched to assist and will cooperate with police investigations to clarify the incident's circumstances. They will also fully assist the family with funeral arrangements.

Off-Site Training Under Harsh Conditions
The sergeant was part of a tank battalion from the Hualien and Taitung Defense Command that had recently traveled to the Artillery Tests Center (陸軍砲兵部隊測考中心) in Tianzhong, Changhua (彰化田中) for off-site live fire training.

The training occurred under challenging conditions with recent high temperatures across Taiwan, making the exercise particularly strenuous for military personnel.
