KEELUNG (TVBS News) — Keelung Mayor George Hsieh (謝國樑) pledged on Monday (July 1) to concentrate on city affairs and prepare for discussions at the Kuomintang (KMT, 國民黨) headquarters after work amid an ongoing recall campaign.
Hsieh's statement came after an initiative from the civic group "Keelung Recall" (山海公民拆樑行動) to oust Hsieh as the mayor announced a significant milestone in their campaign earlier that day.
On June 29, the Keelung Recall group declared that the second phase of their petition had surpassed the threshold. The group revealed that their petition had gathered over 40,000 signatures, just 10,000 short of their safety target. They plan to submit their case on July 5.
Responding to the recall petition during the inauguration of the Keelung Transit Station, Hsieh affirmed his commitment to his mayoral duties and reassured the public that he is prepared for any outcome and will continue to focus on city governance.
