TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan will experience mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies on Tuesday (July 9), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). However, authorities warned that residents should prepare for potential afternoon thunderstorms and brief heavy downpours in western and eastern mountainous regions.

Meteorologist Hsieh Ming-chang (謝明昌) explained that according to the the latest model by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), a cold-core low is moving away, leading to southeast to south winds. He added that there will be isolated showers in eastern Taiwan and the Hengchun Peninsula in the morning, with thunderstorms likely in the afternoon.

Temperatures across Taiwan will range from 33 to 36 degrees Celsius, with some areas in the Greater Taipei Area and central and southern inland regions possibly exceeding 36 degrees. The CWA issued high-temperature warnings for ten counties and cities, including orange alerts for Tainan City and Pingtung County, where temperatures may consistently hit 36 degrees.

On Wednesday, Hsieh predicted the Pacific high-pressure system would weaken, causing south winds. He noted that morning showers are expected in the south, with afternoon thunderstorms possible from central Taiwan northward and in the Yilan and Hualien areas.

Due to weaker Pacific high pressure and southwest winds, thunderstorms will persist on Thursday and Friday (July 11-12). Wu Der-rong (吳德榮), another meteorologist, highlighted a 60% chance of a tropical depression forming east of the Philippines around July 17.

Residents should stay updated on weather changes and plan accordingly.
