TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) addressed the arrest of former Straits Exchange Foundation Chairman Cheng Wen-Tsan (鄭文燦) on Tuesday (July 9), emphasizing that all individuals, regardless of party affiliation, should be thoroughly investigated if involved in illegal activities.

Premier Cho urged the public to await judicial clarification and outcomes while stressing that the Executive Yuan aims to assure citizens that the investigative and judicial processes will proceed swiftly and fairly.

Authorities detained Cheng on corruption charges and initially released him on bail for NT$5 million. However, the Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office (桃園地檢署) immediately appealed, leading the collegiate bench of the High Court (高院合議庭) to overturn the bail decision.

The case has been sent back to the Taoyuan District Court (桃園地方法院) for a new detention hearing scheduled for Tuesday. If confirmed, Cheng's detention will result in a three-year suspension from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨).
