TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) on Tuesday (Oct. 1) assured that Taiwan will have sufficient electricity supply to support the rapid development of AI technology by 2030. He based this projection on assessments from the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA, 經濟部) and Taiwan Power Company (台灣電力公司).

Premier Cho, alongside Economic Minister Kuo Jyh-huei (郭智輝), attended a legislative session where legislators questioned them about AI development and industrial electricity usage. Cho revealed that the government will invest NT$36 billion from 2025 to 2029, with the total technology budget exceeding NT$100 billion.

Cho emphasized Taiwan's ambition to transition from a manufacturing powerhouse to a software design leader, aiming to build its large language model, stating that sovereign AI is the next-generation goal.

Economic Minister Kuo added that the current power plans and green energy development should meet future demands, though he admitted the latter needs to catch up.

Regarding workforce development, Kuo stated that the government plans to train about 200,000 AI engineers over the next four years, 100,000 of whom will be international students.

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP, 民進黨) Legislator Wang Ting-yu (王定宇) inquired about the future AI development hub in Taiwan. Cho responded that Shalun (沙崙) in Tainan will take the lead, noting its ample land for construction and development.
