TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Typhoon Krathon weakened to a moderate typhoon early Wednesday (Oct. 2) morning, but it still poses a significant threat to Taiwan. To prevent potential harm, all work and schools were canceled across Taiwan on Wednesday.

As of 10 a.m., the typhoon's center was about 160 kilometers southwest of Kaohsiung (高雄). Forecasters expect it to make landfall later tonight or early Thursday morning.

The Central Weather Administration (CWA, 氣象署) predicts the typhoon will slowly move north-northeast before turning northeast. It may weaken to a tropical storm upon reaching Taiwan.

The National Fire Agency (消防署) reported 46 injuries, one missing, and 216 typhoon-related damage cases by Wednesday morning, mostly from fallen trees. Despite no fatalities have been reported, Typhoon Krathon's impact is expected to continue until Thursday.

Sixteen cities and counties, including Taoyuan (桃園), Hsinchu (新竹), Miaoli (苗栗), Taichung (台中), Kaohsiung (高雄), Tainan (台南), and Chiayi (嘉義), may announce a typhoon day off on Wednesday evening if wind strength reaches category 7 or above, or gusts may reach category 10 or above. However, local governments are expected to make the final announcement.
