KAOHSIUNG (TVBS News) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC, 台積電) will commence construction on its P3 plant in Kaohsiung this month, according to Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) on Tuesday (Oct. 8).

This development aligns with TSMC's strategy to meet the growing global demand for advanced semiconductor processes, particularly AI chips.

Mayor Chen highlighted that plans for the P4 and P5 plants are progressing on schedule. The Facebook fan page "Kaohsiung Good Life" (高雄好過日) reported that environmental impact assessments for these plants began on Oct. 1.

The assessments aim to expand the original plan to build semiconductor facilities on the former site of CPC Corporation's (中油公司) Kaohsiung refinery.

The expansion project, an extension of the P3 plant, covers approximately 41 hectares. Combined with the original application, the total project area will be about 58.2 hectares.

During a media interview at the Kaohsiung City Council, Mayor Chen confirmed TSMC's plans to add two more advanced process plants, P4 and P5, emphasizing that the environmental assessment procedures will commence soon.

As TSMC continues to expand its presence in Kaohsiung, the city anticipates further economic growth and job opportunities. Stakeholders and residents will closely monitor the progress of these developments, reflecting the broader implications for Taiwan's semiconductor industry.
