TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Presidential Office (總統府) announced the appointment of Liu Suan-yung (劉玄詠), the director of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (NTSO, 國立台灣交響樂團), as Taiwan's new representative to Austria on Monday (Oct. 14).

Liu, renowned as Taiwan's "music ambassador," studied in Austria and holds a diploma from the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna.

The Presidential Office announced that Liu will replace Katharine Chang (張小月), who has been approved for retirement. This appointment marks the third non-diplomatic professional chosen by President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) to lead an overseas office, following representatives to Japan and France.

Liu shares a deep connection with Austria, having graduated from the Department of Music at the Taiwan Provincial Taipei Normal College (台北師專音樂科) in 1981, before he pursued further studies in Vienna.

After completing his diploma, Liu returned to Taiwan and joined the NTSO as the principal trombonist. He also taught at several universities, including Tunghai University, National Taichung University of Education, and National Chiayi University.

Beyond his role as a performer, Liu has made significant contributions as a conductor and music educator. He has promoted music education in remote areas and integrated Taiwan's arts and cultural tourism.

Liu has led the orchestra on numerous domestic and international tours. As a "music ambassador," he aims to invigorate Taiwan's diplomatic efforts through cultural exchange.
