TAIPEI (TVBS News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) will travel to Kinmen (金門) on Friday (Oct. 25) to lead events commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Guningtou (古寧頭戰役). This marks his second visit to Kinmen since taking office on May 20.
Lai will conclude his itinerary by dining with veterans and family representatives of the Battle of Guningtou, and return to Taiwan at noon. Lai first visited Kinmen on Aug. 23, surprising many with his decision to return so soon. In related reports, Lai will participate in a memorial ceremony and inspect local medical advancements at Kinmen Hospital (金門醫院).
Authorities confirmed his plans to revisit after initial speculation suggested otherwise. Lai's actions consistently draw attention from both sides of the Taiwan Strait. His recent speech on Aug. 23, emphasizing "determination," "unity," and "peaceful development," sparked controversy. The China's Taiwan Affairs Office (國台辦) interpreted his remarks as "exaggerating the China threat," causing discontent.
