TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA, 農業部) announced on Monday (Oct. 28) that the Ministry of Environment (MOENV, 環境部) approved two voluntary reduction methods aimed at enhancing Taiwan's carbon sequestration efforts.
These initiatives, which include the "Forest Management Carbon Sequestration Project" (加強森林經營碳匯專案) and the "Bamboo Forest Management Carbon Sequestration Project" (竹林經營碳匯專案), aim to transform forestry and bamboo industry carbon sinks into voluntary reduction tools.
Wang Yu-chen (王玉真), deputy director of the Department of Sources Sustainability (資源永續利用司), explained that the "Forest Management Carbon Sequestration Project" would use various forest management measures to boost carbon absorption and storage capacity. The "Bamboo Forest Management Carbon Sequestration Project," developed in collaboration with Innolux (群創光電), seeks to optimize bamboo density and health to enhance carbon dioxide absorption, with carbon fixed in bamboo products.
MOA plans to offer subsidies next year to encourage businesses and farming groups to participate in these carbon sequestration projects.
This initiative aims to propel Taiwan towards its net-zero emissions target by 2050.
In 2024, the ministry submitted five voluntary reduction methods, including soil management improvements, seagrass restoration, and mangrove restoration, in addition to the two approved projects.
