Taiwan aims to boost pork exports after swine fever win

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — Taiwan is pushing to expand its pork products into international markets, Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) announced Friday (Nov. 1).

This initiative follows the World Organisation for Animal Health's (WOAH) decision to add Taiwan to its list of countries self-declared free from African swine fever.

The Ministry of Agriculture (MOA, 農業部) stated that WOAH officially added Taiwan to the list on Oct. 31, noting that Taiwan and Japan are the only East Asian countries recognized as free from the disease.

This achievement highlights the effectiveness of Taiwan's border disease prevention measures. Cho thanked frontline logistics personnel and the public for cooperating in combating the disease.

He emphasized the key to this success as collaboration between central and local governments, Chunghwa Post (中華郵政), Taoyuan International Airport (桃園機場), veterinary schools, and the pig and meat industries.

Taiwan can export breeding pigs and fresh pork to the Philippines and is actively negotiating with markets in Singapore and Malaysia.

Cho reiterated Taiwan's commitment to maintaining a clean environment, advancing its pork products globally, and ensuring the sustainable development of its livestock industry.
