TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Ministry of Environment (MOENV, 環境部) announced Monday (Nov. 11) that Taiwan's delegation has arrived in Azerbaijan for the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP29). The delegation plans to participate in side events and related forums, ensuring Taiwan's continued meaningful involvement in this significant summit.

The conference, themed "ambition" and "accelerated action," aims to encourage parties to draft ambitious national plans and maintain transparency. The Ministry emphasized that the primary goal of COP29 is to achieve deep, rapid, and sustained temperature reductions to keep the increase below 1.5 degrees Celsius, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Taiwan's 11 registered NGOs will organize side events, exhibits, and forums in the Blue Zone at COP29. This participation underscores Taiwan's ongoing commitment to climate discussions. The Ministry has set up a command center during COP29, allowing real-time viewing of key meetings through online streaming. Delegates will report daily on local observations and negotiation progress.

The Ministry cautioned against activities that may violate regulations, reminding that last year, some civil groups registered under other countries' NGOs but operated as Taiwan's delegation. They urged vigilance among the public to prevent such occurrences. Host nation Azerbaijan reported an attendance of about 40,000, a decrease from last year's 90,000 participants.
